Ten Things To Do Before You Go To Bed to Prevent the Morning Madness

First things first. Hi, I’m Katie.

Mother of three (ages six, three and 10-months), wife to a busy working husband, lifestyle blogger, aspiring freelance writer, PTA over-committer and organizing freak.

Okay, maybe freak is taking things a bit far, but we are admittedly a very busy family and it takes an extreme level of organization to keep this household ticking. Trust me when I say that I’ve tried to lighten up and things go downhill very quickly – nobody has any clean underwear, we’re eating granola bars for dinner and I undoubtedly only put mascara on one eye before leaving the house. So, brace yourself and join me on AboutOne as I share some of the methods to my (family of five) madness.

We all know that morning sets the tone for your entire day – especially if it’s a bad morning. We all also know that by the end of the day we are spent – sometimes too tired to even peel ourselves away from the couch to make it into bed.

I’m a strong believer that getting your mornings on track will improve the daily health of the entire household and will even leave you more energy at the end of each day.

You don’t need to conquer this entire list every night (remember, I’m a freak), but try tackling a couple of these things before you pour yourself in bed and I guarantee, your morning will thank you.

  1. Run the dishwasher or if you ran it right after dinner, put the dishes away. Nothing will ruin your morning like waking up to last night’s pasta still sitting on the counter.
  2. Throw a load of clothes in the washing machine. Then in the morning, you can put that load in the dryer and start a new one. Two loads of washing are done before you even leave the house!
  3. Put out the kids’ clothes. This works for all ages – I put out the babys’ clothes next to his changing table and lay outfits on the floor for my daughters to avoid morning clothes scrambles. Don’t forget to include socks and undies!
  4. Pack your bags and purse. I am notorious for getting in the car and realizing my wallet is on the desk or my phone charger is still plugged into the kitchen outlet.
  5. Put everything you need for the morning next to the front door. Coats, gloves, shoes, hats, school papers, homework, children. Oh wait. Hold off on the children.
  6. Think about tomorrow night’s dinner. Do you need to defrost a roast or some chicken breasts? Put it in the fridge tonight.
  7. Pick up the floor. I hate tripping over toys anytime of the day, but in the morning is the worst.
  8. Get a head start on breakfast. Set the table with bowls, spoons and the cereal box or cut up some fruit.
  9. Make lunches. This is one of my least favorite morning chores – I prefer to do it while I make or clean up dinner.
  10. Visualize your morning. Take a second and think about what you want your morning to be like and how you’ll accomplish that. Then make it a reality.

This is a really great checklist – I already follow the dishwasher and laundry, but love the bag idea near the door – that is constantly something we forget!

I love the kids clothes out the night before. For awhile, I was only doing this for my preschooler- not my toddler. I have no idea why! That one little step saves so much time in them morning.
