Organized Life: Spring Cleaning, Family Style

Organized Life

March 20th marked the First Day of Spring and after the winter my area of the country has been experiencing, that day could not have come fast enough! As I type this, can you believe that a “spring storm” is looming and will grace us with a fresh new coat of 6-10 inches of the white stuff? Just as we have started to see green grass, Mother Nature is pulling the ultimate April Fools’ Day prank. Well, mama, you are not funny!

I had fully planned on taking advantage of the 45 degree days this weekend to open the windows, let the spring breeze filter through the house, wash the floors and tackle the closets that are in desperate needed of some TLC to be organized.

Now, I am not saying I am a complete neat freak- my house can explode with clutter, but after a couple of days it starts to get under my skin and I feel stressed. As soon as I return from work, the first words out of my mouth are not “Hi! How was your day?” but rather “Why is this house still a mess? Please clean up your shoes, your backpack, the dishes, x, y, z…I can’t do this all by myself!”

So that our house looks presentable and mom stays happy- because we all know a happy mom, makes a happy family- we have come up with a system that seems to work for us to keep an organized life. As a family, we pick a night after dinner and compile a main “To-Do” list, which is then posted on the fridge, with an expiration date. Everyone is free to pick and choose the job they would like to do and when completed, mark it off the list. There are no squabbles over who got the easier chore and having a deadline keeps everyone focused and on track, including mom and dad!

The fact that I will be shoveling in a few hours will not deter me from making our list and making plans to do a major “Spring Cleaning” of our abode. With input from ALL family members, the work should take no time at all.

For now, we’ll be organized for life. That is until we reach the teen rooms. Then all bets are off. To get through that kind of mess would take weeks!
